And so the
dust settles on the results of the UNC internal elections. The dying patient may
well make one last convulsion in an attempt at holding on to dear life for just
a little longer, but the dice has been cast, and it’s outcome no longer an unanswered
question. The door of fate has now been closed shut. His faithful supporters in
moaning his passing may become highly agitated, and loud as his life slips away,
but this is as it should be. The new leader will rise to take her place, and
for her taking us from night into the day we are grateful, but can simple change
be the evolution we all seek. So many are hoping against hope that it is, I too
would like to be hopeful, but I hold in my heart the fear that it is not so. Change
is but the seed from which evolution will eventually spring.
I have to
believe that there is a place in my country for me and others of my kind. I am
a progressive liberal and so was never at home in the fold of the conservative PNM.
How can I be when I believe in term limits for politicians, respect for the
will of the people, Land and other property reform, the removal of government
ownership from private enterprise, transparency and accountability in the conduct
of all government business, philanthropy as a social imperative, and the right
of woman and men to control the use of their own bodies once no harm will come
to others? I have longed for an
organization that would hold my political sensibilities. Since the beginning I
have waited through the DLP, ULF, NJAC, ONR, and NAR, I have kept vigil, and
waited, and hoped, so you will forgive me if I am not quick to give into the siren
call that others seem to hear.
